In this guide we will explain step-by-step how you can claim the Ethereum address which holds your NFT (Section 1) and access it on OpenSea (Section 2). Finally, we will show how you can transfer the NFT from the current to another Ethereum address (Section 3).
MetaMask is a browser extension which lets you seamlessly interact with Ethereum and other blockchains. We will now show you the required steps for accessing the Ethereum address which holds your NFT, using MetaMask:
Note: There are alternatives to MetaMask on the market and you might prefer to use another Ethereum-compatible wallet. However, in this guide we exclusively show how to claim your NFT using MetaMask.
Note:
Remove the grey/silver «scratch field» on the backside of your physical NFT card with a coin or similar in order to unveil the 12-word seed phrase (i.e., «Secret Recovery Phrase»). Now manually type the 12 words into the 12 provided fields in MetaMask. Enter the first word of the seed phrase (top left on the physical card) into field 1. in MetaMask, then enter the second word of the first row from the seed phrase into field 2. on MetaMask, then enter the third word of the first row from the seed phrase into field 3. on MetaMask, and keep going with this until you have typed in all 12 words from your seed phrase on MetaMask. Once you have entered all 12 words correctly, the «Confirm Secret Recovery Phrase» button will become clickable – please click on it to proceed.
!CAUTION: Now that you have removed the «scratch field» on your physical NFT card in order to unveil the seed phrase, please ensure to store your NFT card safely. Anyone who has access to your seed phrase could steal all assets stored on the respective Ethereum address.!
OpenSea is a leading global platform for trading NFTs. If you intend to list your NFT for sale, or simply want to showcase it to the world, OpenSea might be your preferred choice. Furthermore, OpenSea makes it comparably easy for users to transfer an NFT from one to another Ethereum address (see Section 3).
We will now show you how to access / see your NFT on OpenSea and make it visible on your OpenSea profile:
Note: Although OpenSea is currently arguably the most famous NFT trading platform, you might prefer to access / trade your NFT on another platform. However, in this guide we provide step-by-step instructions for OpenSea only.
Note: In this guide we are using the Google Chrome browser. User interfaces and interactions might look / be slightly different in other browsers.
OpenSea will ask you to connect your wallet – if you have followed the instructions up to this point and have set everything up with MetaMask then please click on MetaMask here. If you are using another wallet instead, please select the respective wallet from the shown list.
A MetaMask notification window should appear – check if the correct Ethereum address is selected with the check mark and click on the «Next» button.
A MetaMask notification window should appear – click on the «Sign» button in the MetaMask notification window. Congratulations, your MetaMask wallet is now connected with OpenSea.
The page that OpenSea shows you now is your profile page – or more specifically – the profile page of the Ethereum address which you connected with OpenSea in the last few steps. You might notice that the «Collected» tab currently does not show any NFTs. In order to see your received NFT, please click on «More» and then on «Hidden».
Note: If your intention is to directly list your NFT for sale on OpenSea you can initiate the listing process by clicking on the «List for sale» button. However, due to security reasons, we recommend that you first transfer the NFT to another of your Ethereum addresses (see Section 3 below).
Finally, due to security reasons, we recommend that you transfer the NFT from the Ethereum address which we created for you (i.e., the Ethereum address which is on your physical NFT card) to another of your Ethereum addresses. This way you can be 100% assured that no one else other than you possesses the seed phrase to the Ethereum address that holds your NFT. If you do not yet have another / an own Ethereum address, we recommend that you create a new one (please refer to the note section in Step 3.3. if you need guidance for this).
In the following steps we will show you how you can transfer your NFT from the current to another / a new Ethereum address using the OpenSea platform:
Note: If your intention is to directly list your NFT for sale on OpenSea you can initiate the listing process by clicking on the «List for sale» button. However, due to security reasons, we recommend that you first transfer the NFT to another of your Ethereum addresses.
Note: If you do not yet have your own Ethereum address you can create one by following steps 1.1.-1.4. (see above) – at step 1.4. click on the «Create a new wallet» button and finish the process in MetaMask. Since you are already using MetaMask with the Ethereum address from your physical NFT card you might want to create a second browser account in the browser you are using and download MetaMask on this second browser account again. Alternatively, you might prefer to download MetaMask in a different browser where you are not currently using it. After setting up your new Ethereum address in MetaMask you will be able to see / copy your newly created Ethereum address in / from your MetaMask browser extension.
It will show you the expected «gas costs» for the Ethereum transaction associated with the NFT transfer. Once you are ready to make the transfer click on the «Confirm» button to continue.
Note: Gas costs (i.e., the Ethereum «network fee») are paid for in the ETH cryptocurrency (i.e., the native token of the Ethereum blockchain) and vary depending on the congestion of the Ethereum network. In order to be able to confirm the NFT transfer transaction you will need to hold a certain amount of ETH on the Ethereum address from which you want to transfer the NFT out of (e.g., in the example from the screenshot you would need to hold at least 0.00523435 ETH). Since the Ethereum address which we created for you does not hold any ETH when you claim it, you will need to send ETH to that address in order to be able to make the NFT transfer.
